And sometimes you just don’t feel like the hassle. And then watching TV is still very pleasant. You turn on the TV and zap around. You don’t have to choose, set up or download anything in advance. Switch on and consume immediately. Also for young people a reason that watching TV remains attractive.

In this mini-study it was noticeable that young people who subscribe to YouTube channels watch less TV. It seems that YouTube the franchisor’s job is to provide has taken over this role from TV for them. I can imagine that: both ensure that there is always content ready to consume immediately, without having to do anything else. The advantage of YouTube is that you can still make a personal selection there, which is not possible with TV.

Every organization can be confronted with it

A crisis. But what, to whom and how are you going to communicate? And have you ever thought about the influence of social media on a crisis? Within minutes, the first speculations are already online and citizens expect answers immediately. What do citizens actually need and on which media are they active? And is the press conference still necessary or has it become redundant?

For this article I conducted qualitative market research. In order to find out about the need for information and the use of social media among citizens, I conducted surveys among all age groups in Dutch society. I also spoke to several experts, namely a spokesperson for the police and a social media advisor for governments, to map out the practice.

Crisis communication
Let us first look at what citizens actually understand by crisis communication. Does this correspond with the opinions of people who work in the field or is there hardly any distinction made (by citizens) between crisis communication and ‘normal’ communication from an organization?

Citizens are reasonably familiar with the difference between crisis communication and regular communication from an organization. The most important characteristics of crisis communication that they mention are:

the speed at which a message is published

the length of the message.
Citizens understand what is happening
Messages sent during a crisis are shorter and contain more specific information than messages sent outside of  singapore lead a crisis.
